Would You Swim In Power Plant Wastewater?

Normally, the answer would be no. But in these very limited circumstances, at Iceland's Blue Lagoon, you can swim in geothermal power plant wastewater, and it's even healthy: although the marketing material doesn't usually mention it. Here's a story about geothermal energy, cheap heat, and how to keep some ducks warm.

One thing I couldn't fit into my script: the pipeline expands by around several metres along its length when it's in use, because of the hot water running through it. The big boxes along the way are expansion joints and supports to allow it to move! As ever, all my sources are in the description.

Tom, I just discovered your channel last week even though you've been at this for what appears to be ages, and I have to say: your level of fascination with such a broad range of topics is 100% contagious. Never stop.

There’s a place on the leeward side of Oahu in Hawaii called Kahe “Electric” Beach. The gas-powered electric plant dumps warm water into the sea. It’s a popular snorkeling site.

About the water from nuclear plants: "you're probably fine" - seriously? It is absolutely NOT fine. There are extremely toxic chemicals in that water, and they may interact to produce even more toxic conditions. I was an equipment operator in a nuclear plant. I quit, due to unsafe conditions. Nuclear plants are insanely unsafe, in so many ways. Don't you bother to question the assertions you make in your videos? "Science"?

I was there many years ago before, the modern fascilities were there. All there was, was a shed where you could change clothes. A small wooden pier you could dive from, if you felt absolutely suicidal. And there was the metal mesh that cut the lake in two. In one end you could bathe. In the other you would boil alive. According to the warning sign that is. Strangest warning sign, I've ever come across!

Actually a coal plant uses that water to condense the steam back to liquid so it can start the process of turning it into steam again. The condensate system is a closed system that uses purified water to to make steam to power the turbine.

Fun fact! CANDU nuclear reactors don't have lake water touching nuclear fission particles, is measured for tritium on the way back to the lake, and has to be cooled to no more than 2°C above current lake temperatures. Yes, people in Ontario fish and occasionally swim (the out flow of water is very dangerous IMO due to current and water speed) in the outflow.
