QANTAS will never go bankrupt, for it owns its aircraft. Nealy all other airlines lease their 'planes via deals with the manufacturers. Most airlines make money by ticket sales, whereas QANTAS has long haulage contracts with major corporations. Since it has never had a crash, their insurance costs are very low.

All of the bankruptcies in 2019 and the ones that are occurring and will occur in 2020 will ultimately make the survivors stronger as they will have less competition. Airline travel was set to increase substantially over the next 10 years before cv-19 hit... I think business will pick back up in a year or two and the industry will continue to grow.

Come March, that's when the airlines have cash flow issues, because that's when the coronavirus season begins. And that's because nobody wants to fly anywhere, and no one has the money to fly anywhere because they are all unemployed waiting for promises from the government that will never be fulfilled.

In the long run, it may be more beneficial to let the companies go bust when they do and let the industry learn from it to allow for more resilient companies within an industry than to keep honouring failure with tax payers money.

Thomas Cook’s decline was not just the airline, it was a 178 year Tour Operator. There was only one flight due out that night that did not go. And the CAA only intervenes with package holiday collapses.

They do not go bankrupt. The investor divert their profit to some other business and keep small amount for operation of their fleets. During lean period they can not make more profit. Hence bankrupt. It is unethical business. In India one example is Jet airways. Govt works for bailout by taking tax payers money. That is how poor people become more poor and rich people become filthy rich. Socialism is for rich people because government supports by putting tax payers money for bail out. For poor people capitalism so that if you survive ok otherwise die.

A rich decadent, multinational, no loyalty to a nation state company, highly polluting business going belly up? I don't care. never flew and never want to. For some reason going on a holiday twice a year by plane makes people whine about climate change and feel superior.

When a company pays their worthless CEO 400 million pounds annually, the odds of that company failing are going to be quite high. With such a bad business decision to pay their CEO that much, it is obvious that a lot more bad business decisions are going to be made. Add to this that jets offer the worse possible experience in travel and they are going to fail.

@jessimatic What are you on about? A worldwide pandemic forces people to stay home and not travel, and you're blaming capitalism for the lack of air travel? Besides, mass-scale commercial air travel would NEVER have existed without capitalism, it would only be available to the elite and politicians under socialism, just as was the case in the Soviet Union.
Jason Dashney

@jessimatic So in a non-capitalist place airlines would be able to sustain themselves? Communists still get paid, ya know.
