Doesn't magnesium burn hot enough to dissociate some of the hydrogen and oxygen in water into their component gases?

Many years ago, when I was in a rented house share with another pyromaniac, we acquired a magnesium box. It was great fun breaking bits off and setting it on fire with the blow torch that was set up on the kitchen table. One night, when we got bored with the blow torch, we chucked the remains of the box (a corner) onto the open fire in the living room. Eventually it caught fire, then we decided to bung some ammonium nitrate into the corner of the burning box (we just happened to have a big bag of it in the cupboard for some reason). Nothing happened for about a second, then there was the brightest light I have ever seen that lasted for a very short time and the box was gone. It must have looked spectacular from outside, a shaft of white light heading skywards from the chimney.

I wouldn’t be surprised if magnesium was commonly added to thermite to make lighting it easier, although from what I understand it lights pretty easily anyway

At the Cabin Crazy show in York, Pa i enjoyed the chain that spun on a wheel powered by a motor. That might be cool in big scale. The cardboard dragon that followed you with its eyes escaped me. I don't know if that would translate well to video. I would also like to see a bunch of small relatively easy projects. Might keep the attention of those challenged with a short attention span.

You missed nicer experiments: 1-2 mm Mg wire burns continuously in air and under water as light source for scuba divers. As thin ribbons in the 50-60's were used as flashlights triggered by batteries before the xenon flash light was born
