I FEEL this.. I grew up in Dubai where every person in my class was of a different nationality. I’m Bosnian but I’ve got a very neutral/ American accent (from what I’ve been told) but I change mine to adapt to the person I’m speaking with (i.e. Indian, Arab, etc.) I call it the Expat accent, a bit of every accent smashed into one.

I'm South African and I speak all 11 of our official languages. I can relate to what Trevor is saying. I always change my accent according to who talking to. I'm Tsonga, when I speak to some of my elderly relatives in Limpopo I have to speak the deep Tsonga and change my accent so they can understand me better. But with friends and any younger person I switch to slang. Our languages are so diverse. I've realised that in most places when you switch to someone's accent they receive you better because they feel like you are one of their own.

As a Haitian i can 100% confirm his statement, when we're around regular people and a few Haitians we're totally Americanized, but as soon as you put us in a space with only Haitians or we're back in Haiti it's as if the spirit of our ancestors took over our body *lmfao*

Fact check: Model C is not private school. That's a misrepresentation. They were the former "white" schools during Apartheid and which subsequently became open to all races.

My mom does that. She speaks with an Arabic accent when she's speaking with my Arab cousins, even though my mom is a white American.

Ha ha ha... Have you ever been to the linguistic mess that is Haiti, Trevor? It's crazier than you can ever imagine. Have you ever seen 5 people hold a conversation in 3 different languages, jumping from one to another, starting a sentence in one and finishing it in another, asking a question in one and having it answered in another like it's the most natural thing in the world? That's how we do it. 😂

Lol this was good. So, I don’t think I mirror “accents” but I’d say mirror “dialects”. I do it with my coworkers all the time and people I meet. I think that’s how my brain has processed how efficiency works. So, this must be rather common.

🤓I research linguistics. Those examples are dialects, not accents; & probably in linguistic terms, his grandmother's would actually be classified as a separate language. Eventually languages evolve with others (so many examples are with English) so it creates what seems like slang when compared to 'educated English' but it's actually the evolution of an older language. Different grammar, especially in that kind of context, is a good guide for that. The difference between that & a dialect would be that a dialect is still 'proper English' but uses words specific to a geographical area that people unfamiliar with a phrase/word just don't understand. The entire UK has lots of examples of that. And then the difference between a dialect & an accent is that you're both speaking the same language, you understand each other perfectly & use the same grammar & words etc., but you sound different from each other. So people speaking English from, e.g. Texas & Boston; or from France & Brazil... etc. I'm Scottish, technically Scots is classed as a separate language - originally in southern areas; Gaelic is Highlands (& more like Irish... random example: _sgian-dubh_ is the knife tucked into kilt socks & pronounced _'skee-ən-DOO'_ - it's *very obviously* a different language. I don't speak it! Although odd words like that are widely known because they have no other name.) Scots is considered more of a West of Scotland dialect now (sometimes called an accent in this same way); a lot of words are generally considered slang/ bad grammar/ 'bad English' because it has merged with English so much. If you fancy learning some Scots, Buzzfeed has an obsession with 'Scottish Twitter' - & a hilarious article full colourful insults if you Google 'Scottish twitter roasted trump' - enjoy!🤣 If you ever find yourself in Glasgow trying to have a conversation with someone (taxi driver stories are common), or understand words in that article, it definitely sounds like a different language to people who say, "I thought they spoke English in Scotland." Glaswegians consider an Edinburgh _accent_ to be 'posh'. My grandparents' generation definitely spoke 'Scots' I had to tune my ear into. So many layers!! When I go home (from the US), I am frequently asked where I come from. You can practically pinpoint the area of a city/town (or if someone went to private school 😄 - & where) by their accent. So people do change it up a bit because of stereotypes. Apparently I just confuse people. And *in* the US, I've been asked what language I'm speaking to another Scottish person - tbf, the person who asked was Egyptian & I think we must just have been talking quickly to each other (he was serving someone else in a store; we weren't being rude!) Although I'm frequently told I "speak very good English." 🙄 Cheers! Or slàinte! Apart from technicalities/ definitions, linguists have no idea why we have such diverse accents, especially in small areas like the UK, when we're speaking the same language. If you're someone who uses the term 'British accent' - just search for it on FRvid. 😉
