Moe, Larry, and Curly were just a few funny fellas who grew up in the school of hard knocks. Unfortunately for them, the knocks didn't stop coming after they hit it big in showbusiness. Here's a look at the tragic true-life story of the men known as The Three Stooges.
Moses Horwitz, better known to fans as as Moe Howard, was the group's fearless leader. He was born in a small Jewish community outside Brooklyn, the second youngest of five brothers. He had shoulder-length hair and was ruthlessly picked on for it. So one day he decided to give his locks a big chop. The result was the famous bowl cut he became known for, long before The Beatles made it cool.
Moe survived the bullying in grade school, but he dropped out of high school after just two months, as he was far more interested in something else: showbiz. He would stand outside the local theater waiting for someone to buy him a 10-cent ticket. When he'd get in, he'd stand at the top of the balcony, chin on the railing, dreaming about becoming an actor one day.
He hustled at the theater, running errands and doing odd jobs until he got his own gig performing in blackface at minstrel shows along the Mississippi River. In 1922, Moe and his brother Samuel, aka Shemp, linked up with Ted Healy and brought their boyhood jostling to vaudeville.
Watch the video to learn the tragic real-life story of The Three Stooges.

Curly, without a doubt, but I liked Shemp a lot too. That episode where he got his head stuck inside a fish bowl almost killed me! They were VERY popular with me and my friends in the early '60's.

Moe, Larry, Curly (and Shemp) were the greatest comedy team that graced this planet. I'm in my 50's now and even though I have watched them my whole life I still laugh uncontrollably to this day.

I adore the Stooges. Ever since I was a kid I watched them. Moe being my favorite. I have the box set and I still watch the old episodes to this day. They take me back to a better time in America when the culture didn’t suck.

What this videoclip documentary about "The Three Stooges" fails to mention is that after Curly Howard suffered a series of debilitating strokes, Moe Howard allegedly had Curly sign an agreement in which Curly gave up his right to residuals from broadcasts of "The Three Stooges'" short films. If that is true then it makes one lose respect for Moe Howard as a human being.

The only Stooges I *don't* like are Joe Besser and Joe DeRita. Besser was worse, *but* was good as "Stinky" with Abbott and Costello. I like Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp, equally. Each had their own unique contributions to the act.

Curly's last words hit me hard, I'm 27, they were all dead before I was born. Thanks to my dad introducing me to the Stooges early in my childhood I will always be a fan, and I think Curly would be happy to know that he was still making kids like me laugh long after his death. God, rest their souls.

*Moe was my stepfather's uncle so I'm biased!* I wish I could share some personal pictures of Moe and his three brothers but I can't figure out how. I can share with you that the last time Moe came to visit us, he popped his dentures out, chasing me around our house to intentionally scare me at age 6+ (successfully, I should add)! 😳 I'm new to FRvid and am so grateful to have seen your video because I didn't know all that much about his brother's lives... 😎

I saw most of their short films from 1960 to around 1967 as a child. I never knew how badly they were ripped off, but history has revealed how lowdown and dirty hollywood was(and still is) after the way they ruined the lives of so many, like Judy Garland. This is a sad story.

I'm getting up there in years, and still love to watch the humor of the 'Three Stooges' the humor is not only timeless but, depending upon how you understand it, it can be taken down to four layers. They were funny, and anything but dumb - their timing and acting was impeccable! Also it gives you a great view of what things you saw back then. The street lamps were beautifully made and the shops had elegant touches. The furniture and houses were fantastically sculpted. You saw how people dressed and acted towards each other back then. And the vernacular along with phrasing was a bit different and interesting to hear. Definitely a trip back in time!
Tpklmale Il y a 29 jours
Poor Shemp, he could never stand the hitting albeit staged hitting. The slaps were loosened fingers only, never a palm slap. The eye pokes, the fingers would contact the eyebrows, not the eyes. My grandmother couldn't stand them, she'd just shake her head and say "all that chaos and disorder". I'd say "yeah, ain't it great?" LOL
