I honestly really loved this movie even more than hereditary which I liked a lot & have some stuff to content with in this review. I thought the beginning part connected really well to the rest of the story of the main character and I think her story is really the only one that matters thus part of the reason for the shallow character development of the friend group. The elongated setup works to convey from the beginning that is specifically about her. Part of why I liked it so much is as someone who has dealt with similar mental illness issues in my own family, it gives you an understandings as to why she makes the decisions she does. It's easy to get into a bad relationship and feel like a burden when you are worried and complaining about your complicated family. You are used to others not feeling hollow or shallow because they haven't dealt with as much + those people not notice when things are off kilter as much as you do. For a person who deals with the chaos if mental illness, it could also to be easy to embrace something that is totally different than your own normal, ie her just falling into and embracing her May Queen status. Plus, at a certain point you might go over the deep end with frustration and decide to dress your boyfriend in a bear costume and torch him to death (jk lol). One thing that shouldn't be overlooked either that it is not just about grief from a random tragedy but years and years of her dealing with the mentally ill loved one and being scared. She has been used to dealing with unpredictable stuff for years. It's almost like the commune is the opposite of that, it has order, even if that order is disturbing. I think this is a deeply psychological film written by someone who has had to deal with a lot of chaos and i don't think its as pretension and self-indulgent as reviewed. It's like a waking dream for someone who grew up in a trauma inducing household.

The film clearly tries to make you feel uncomfortable. The first third of the film I just felt sorry for her. The second third i just thought: WTF are they doing? And why? Then it got more interesting and abstract! Yea, the friends were dumb. The boyfriend was even more stupid.

Its funny. I saw a clip for a movie a few months ago that i swear could have been this or at the very least similar. Yet it can't be because the main actor was Jude law. Know the one? Or am I losing it

The first minutes of the film are what leads Danny to join the group on this trip and explain her whole processing of what happens in Sweden, especially her smile in the end. It's one of the films that give you a little extra each time you watch it.

Has anyone seen the Director’s Cut? I think it’s adds a good deal to the storyline. If the theatrical version is a B+ for me, I’d certainly give the Director’s Cut an A minus or an A. It’s nearly as good as Hereditary imho. Chris should review it. Maybe his opinion might change. I think he undergraded/underrated this one.

this movie is the stupidest nonsense I've seen. I don't understand how people watch this and are entertained or like it. the only good thing about the movie is the cinematography and Florence Pugh. I swear to God watching the scene where the people jump off the cliff is the most boring and dragged on scene I've seen in a long time: it took like 8 mins for the lady to actually kill herself. god this movie dragged. I really hate this movie is all i'll say.

I just watched this film and I honestly don’t know how to feel about the plot. On one hand, I understand the symbolism in relation to the themes of grief and terrible relationships, but I feel like some of the choices made to convey these themes, while visually and emotionally powerful, lose the plot. Like I get that Dani as a character started to realize that Christian was a fucked up boyfriend, but her decision to sacrifice him in that way while allowing this cult to murder everyone of her shitty friends seems way too out of character for anyone who the movie wants us to sympathize with. Like that douchebag was literally raped (that scene where he is drugged and led to impregnate that woman) and yet somehow I feel like the director wants me to view that scene and think “oh yeah, that’s probably a representation of his scumminess or his lost faithfulness”. Just some of the decisions the characters made in the film were out right torn from reality to depict a message that was honestly not big enough to warrant a sacrifice from that reality. I love the imagery in this film and I understand the message. However, the film is pretentious and falls for character oversimplifications for the sake of a message that loses the plot.

Sometime i feel if people love the director they automatically have a bias opinion about his/her movies. Even if u dont like it alot you still think u should like it , i felt about few of Aronofsky’s film and i think this film falls on a same category, because of Hereditary lot of people think Midsommer is more than it actually is

Man I hate that I can't search the comments, as I'm sure somebody has mentioned this, but am I right that the chicken on the table in the last feast, that appears to slowly move up and down, is actually a couple of their friends? Don't we see this confirmed later at the chicken coop? That is the kind of subtle plot move that makes Midsommar a good movie, like Session 9.

Everyone is misunderstanding when Chris says that the "First 20 minutes never get brought up again." After sitting and watching the film, the extremity of the presentation of a suicide/homicide (if even that) leaves much more to be wondered and explored. We can gleam Dani's actions from it, sure, but that doesn't mean it was a good scene. We could've understood her actions without even seeing the deaths, but clearly there was more to be said about the death scene. I think this is what he's talking about, that there was more to explore and say from that scene that never got brought up again.

Wait what? The stuff happening in the intro (first 12-20min) is never brought up again? Never explored or explained? Damn, I stopped the movie at the 30-40 min mark and watching the review instead. Because the storytelling is so bad I got bored by it. The foreshadowing is more of a forehammering-in-your-face and just subtle like a giant rock dumped on your feet. So the intro is just pointless and can be skipped. Good job director! Good job!

I think the first 20 minutes of her family relates to the rest of the movie in that the cult, as fucked up as it was, allowed her to grieve. Witnessing suicide embraced in such a horrific manner and encountering a new perception of a cyclical life while in a daze completely alters the lead character by the end of the movie. So much so, she sacrifices her former lover for her new found life.

The movie is beautifully made, but I hated the film. I love Hereditary and have watched it many times, and so I was excited for this movie. For some reason I kept pushing it off though. I had many opportunities to watch it and thought no, I will do so another time. Tonight was finally that time when I decided to just go for it, and I was deeply unsettled. Not in the enjoyable, scared during but like the movie way, but in a way that grossed me out and caused me to really dislike the movie. I agree about the plot points, and almost all of the characters were terrible (lacking any story, understanding of them etc.) besides Dani and Pelle. I was super excited about the concept, but it fell flat in some aspects for me too. It reminded me a lot of Green Inferno, which I also hated. This movie is visually and acoustically stunning, but I hated it and it has left me feeling genuinely disturbed and upset, in a very unwelcome way. Like, I probably would have preferred to have not seen it, knowing how it has left me feeling.

I still don't understand the appeal of Jeremy Jahns. Why did he of all people get so big? The same goes for Chris Stuckmann. Both those big you tube critics are overrated hacks in my opinion. Jeremy Jahns is a fucking joke. He acts like a spastic on crack in every video he's in, he doesn't offer any real genuine or worthwhile criticism or analysis on a film. He offers the same shit you could get from a random guy you just talked to outside the cinema, he doesn't know half as much about film as he acts like he does, and he's a horrible painfully unfunny actor who comes across about as genuine as a three dollar bill in every video he's in. And tell me again how the hell it is even possible to review a film in 6 minutes or less? How? How do you even get through the cast and crew and still have time to offer any in depth views on a film? Oh wait. You can't. Because it's impossible. And because of his success people think his shitty reviews are what reviews should be. And they chastise people like myself for daring to go in depth and be themselves, don't put on an act, and just give it to people straight. Fuck him up his overrated tight crack riddled ass with that foam lightsaber he loves so much that he's literally cumming at the sight of it in the thumbnail pic posted below. And Chris Stuckmann isn't any better. He's a wannabee film snob who begged and kissed ass to the top. He's not someone you should look up to or look for advice on what a quality film is or isn't, because he isn't a quality person. He's an asshole. He's manipulative and he's stepped on so many people to get where he is today. He just stayed around the right people, kissed their asses and boom he's you tube famous. He is also pretentious as all hell and it drives me up the fucking wall. He isn't as deep as he thinks he is, and his Hilarocity reviews are the cinematic equivalent of nailing my dick to the wall. I have had farts that have been funnier than any of those videos. I would love to see Chris do a video without a script and edits and see how well he articulates himself and actually hear and see an honest opinion from him. Not some bullshit scripted out opinion to make sure he doesn't lose subs and ad revenue. Both these critics can blow each other up their ass, and fuck off to the moon. The world would be a better place, and so would you tube. If you like either of them? I have no issue with that. I just hate both of them and find their reviews to be horrendous in quality and in content. And take my advice folks. Look to yourself for advice on what films to watch or not watch. If you want to look for advice from these guys or even someone like me? That's fine. But don't base your decision on what they or I might say about a film. If you want to see it? See it. You're the best critic, because you know exactly what you like, don't like or what you are interested in. Not them, not me, not anyone else. You. But still fuck Jeremy Yawns, and Chris Suckman in their asses with a chainsaw on the moon for all eternity. I'll take Ocpcommunications and Ramboraph4life as they are REAL people and with a true passion for movies and can sometimes see the errors in Hollywood nowadays.

@InkDoMink Nope.. I watched the downloaded version. In my country there's no point watching horror movies in theater for most of the horrific scenes: gore, satanic, cult, religious, semitic-related are left out. Halloween (2007) with 2 hours movie runtime may only be one and a half hour. I doubted in the director's cut was what it was premiered in the country I'm in.

SPOILERS. The first 20 minutes of the film were setting up Dani to be in vulnerable state. She had to be as vulnerable as possible so that she would be primed to accept the horrific culture of that cult. She just lost her entire family. And she is the only one of the outsiders they wanted to bring into the cult. In order for Dani's gradual acceptance of the cult's "traditions" to be plausible, she had to be vulnerable, and looking for another family, which she was. You could see (SPOILER) at the end how her face transformed gradually from horror at the sacrifices she had just witnessed, to acceptance and then joy.

I mostly agree with you on the characters being more like objects than people, but only for, maybe, half the cast. Dani and Christian, at the very least, felt very much like real people to me if only because of the realistic take on their relationship and their responses to the hardships they were faced with.

Great film, but i seriously need to say the amount of feminist toxicity that surrounds this movie really drags this film down... i think there was even a report on how the film makers were shock to hear the amount of hatred christians character got and how his death was "celebrated" by this specific audience.
