An hour in before you get to the cult ya, but her sister killing her parents and taping a hose into her mouth to choke and die on the fumes from the car? That’s not disturbing? Lmao

This movie was hot garbage! Too much time of nothingness before you see anything of substance. The ending was underwhelming as well. Glad I watched a bootleg. They were getting my coint hunty

I like Midsommar better than Hereditary tbh, I thought Midsommar had better pacing than Hereditary and that is what makes it Midsommar the more enjoyable of the two

This is a horrible fucking movie. Point blank. No sugar coating it. The black guy going to the train station without his girl should’ve raised everyone’s eyebrows. Then the girl disappears. Then the other black guy disappears. Then the white guy is gone. Like damn when y’all gone leave? Just very unrealistic. Beautiful cinematography and colors but the story never stuck with me. Definitely not a horror. Me and my friends would’ve been gone as soon as the train station dude was. One truck? Don’t worry. We’re from the country side of Georgia. We know how to walk.

I disagree with you on the setup. Her grief was one of the highlighted elements to the story. The scene of her crying frantically with her bf is mirrored later when she cries with the commune. We were shown how she was isolated in her grief with her boyfriend and his friends, how she had to walk away and frantically scream in silence. She wasn’t empathized with in any way. That’s clear in her boyfriends body language in the first crying scene. Later on when she breaks down similarly with the commune women she finally sees others empathize with her pain and feel it with her, they let her embrace it out loud instead of hiding it to not be a burden. There’s also a bunch of other examples but for me this film did a great job displaying the loneliness felt in grieving a traumatic event, we all can watch the same movie and see it differently.

I even saw parts in this movie that also reminded me of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills have Eyes. I'm sure that the director was inspired by all of those great classics.

I think the opening and the rest of the movie very much connects. They died suffocating. Later, members of the cult are repeatedly shown exhaling and inhaling sharply together. The beginning says a lot about Dani, her family, and their relationships. Her sister was a mentally ill woman who scared her family frequently. She lived with her parents and it’s implied by Dani that they fight sometimes. Dani is obviously away from home. To me, that says there’s always been a disconnect in the family. Maybe that’s why her sister used that method; physically connecting with the garden hoses and connecting w her parents through death. Despite a disconnect, these relationships were a home for Dani and it’s just been taken away. So when she meets the cult, they are all connected through death, life, and breath. Unlike Christian, Pelle remembers things about Dani and sees her pain. I think he loves her, in his own twisted way. He loves Hargas and believes it will be perfect for Dani bc he sees himself in her. He’s also an orphan but like he said, he still always had a home. He wants Dani to feel that way and knows hargas can provide that for her. She has no family and her boyfriend only pretends to care out of guilt. Even though the women yelling w her probably isn’t a 100% true connection, it is a tool to make her feel like she’s not alone. This connection, faux or not, is real enough for her. These people build her up, not break her down. From the beginning she is completely, overwhelmingly out of control. By the end, she is given control.

I agree with your assessment. I just saw it and it didn't strike a nerve like Hereditary did. Hereditary made me afraid of the dark again and that is a good horror film!

Beautiful looking film but the narrative was a bit messy. Same with Hereditary. For the future this dude might wanna collaborate with someone else on a screenplay.

You're nuts. That movie is stunning. There is so much depth, whether the author did it intentionally or not, that I will be revisiting this movie over and over, I think. It expressed the nature of life, grief, fear, hope, and home in a muted but insanely expressive way. I found myself in tears many times and though I thought I wouldn't I ended up smiling with her in the end. This is one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

I respect your opinion, but I feel you were wrong about the theme of grief in the film. The idea was that during times of grief you need a stable and strong empathetic support system that helps guide you and allows you to move on in a healthy way. The cycle of life, death and renewal after a time of suffering was so powerfully represented by the film imo. Life and death, suffering and pleasure were regarded as gifts by the "cult" and to me it gave me both a sense of fear and euphoria. Nature was used I think to represent renewal and the group screaming together with Dani was used to represent empathy. By the end she accepts her trauma and is able to move on having coped with this extreme situation together with a group of people feeling her pain and getting rid of what burdened her, bringing catharsis.

Really Chris?? You couldn't understand why the first 20 min of the movie had ANY connections to the continuity of the main protagonist Dani?? 😑🙄😲

Whether I agree with you or not, I always learn something or think about something in a way I may not have. You do a great service to enjoying movies more which is impossible to measure. Thank you. SPOILER ALERT: The death of her parents was key because it made her a vulnerable person that had no family. Once her boyfriend was dead she had nothing left that connected her to the rest of the world and she could now fully be enveloped into the cult.

@Regan. its more then a possibility he definitely did, that cult had everything planned to T, also if you notice when the fire fighters open the room to her dead sister the duct tape is on the outside of the door, she couldn't have taped the outside from the inside

This movie is the antithesis of Hereditary. Almost everything you love about that movie is missing from Midsommar. Only things that are up to par are the camera shots, effects, angles, and composition. Very disappointing, especially since my favorite horror movie currently is Hereditary.

I think a lot of people who liked this movie are perverts who are into sadism and necrophilia. It was a shitty movie and I wish I could erase it from my memory. But at least it wasn't filmed in Sweden, so the real world place it is supposed to take place in has not been stained by this mess.

I normally see very eye to eye sight Chris on horror, but man, I’m missing something with this movie. Maybe I’m eff’d but I laughed far more than I ever felt any sort of dread or concern. I feel like this movie suffers from so many horror cliches: smart character making very dumb decisions , the most disturbing character being set up as a “good guy/girl”, etc. there were some areas where the cults symmetrical grief was comical , I get that it’s representing someone actually grieving with Dani, or other members, but some of it is almost silent movie era over acting. Heck, the end scene made me feel like I was watching a clip of a Parkway Drive mosh pit. The run time is wayyy too long , some of the more interesting characters are killed off too early for this runtime , so you’re left with this horrible downtime. SPOILER ALERT FOR THIS ...... the build up for the growing hate between Christian and Dani was not set up the best. They had some obvious growing distance between them , but it never got built up like I thought it would once their friends disappeared. Also, a lot of it felt very predictable. After the elder suicide , my friends wife , him , and I started guessing spot On things that would come to happen. Obviously not the best suit, and the love potion was alluded to , I know. Honestly this movie better functions as a dark comedy to me. Maybe one day I’ll sit down and watch it again, but first viewing it just Wasn’t doing anything to make me feel dread , fear, anxiety. Nothing. I watched IT 2 recently, and even though I’ve read the book and it was inferior to chapter 1, I found myself feeling much more fear or dread in that movie than any point in midsommar. As a horror movie D, as a dark comedy B-
