In recent years I've noticed a dip in quality in CGI, resulting in many digital creations that feel very unreal. In this video, I explore why that may be. Please comment below if you know more about CGI and can answer the questions posed in this video.

I work for a company in Belgium specialized in CGI / render . And All a can say about thoses bad cgi scene is the light is ruining the 3d model. The light is the key in 3D rendering ! i.imgur.com/1Golhyn.png Just take a look at this kind of 3D render (yes all is in 3D), www.artstation.com/artwork/mGbny the light is making all the realism in that scene, not the models or the materials. Light and color grading at the best :) !

holy jesus, if nobody told me, I'd definitely take those as real pictures. That's just incredible

@Richard Rester So you think the people that work on such high budget movies are amateurs? You've probably seen raw unfinished works, you should know the difference between an amateur's work and a professional's one and no way an amateur is going to get hired there in such studio

@GW2Scapades I would also add that quite often you have to follow vision of a director, which might take it away from the realism. Plus the curse of " we can tweak this some more" to a point where you overtweak it. Often times the earlier renders are already pretty good, and it's the pursuit of perfection where things starts to go wrong

This 3D looks amazing, but it also reminds me a lot of how I reacted to Myst when it first came out. To me that was photorealistic at the time.

Pretty soon we'll have AI and Machine Learning on the scene doing animation and renders. They'll help cut the time and cost down... and deal with all those pesky details like shading, lighting, physics, weight, gravity etc. IT should augment the talent that's already there.

CGI is NOT getting worse.. its becoming MORE ACCESSIBLE to people with LOWER TALENT.

Can’t wait to see the new Dark Crystal series, it’s supposedly using a lot of practical effects with CGI help, it’s important we give it some support so the company’s lame ass staticians report that something made for such a long time with that much effort is “profitable”

Case and point, corporations make amazing technology...then squander all potential by utilizing said technology to maximize profit and minimize effort to appease their vermin stockholder buddies.

I would not agree with the part about Hobbit. Also I would not agree that these effects are "ugly". I think it's all about moving from film do digital cameras. Compare movies without CGI, just look the difference based on the source. For some people digital , "perfect" image is not what it's all about, there is no magic in it. And like in photography, digital means just ...flat.

Pre CGI was better, but since we'll never get back to those days, it's true CGI is getting worse. The Return of the King already showed signs of rushing and botching compared to the first two Lord of the Rings. The crappy oliphants and army of ghosts, and Legolas making moves like he's in a video game when he jumps up on an oliphant, like you said for Black Panther, you can tell the character is now weightless. The Star Wars prequels were also abusing, but they're somewhat more forgivable than the Jar Jar Abrahams ones. Back in 1999, CGI and numerical were getting to a new level and Lucas got too excited with it. Yoda fighting is beyond comedy and that scene with Anakin and Padme in the robot factory is also ridiculous video game stuff (notice there's a very similar scene in.. I think it's Minority Report... not sure but I know it's a Spielberg sci-fi movie tat came out in about the same time and I remember thinking ''Well look at that, Lucas read his friend's script then when he wrote Attack of the Clones and thought he had a good idea of his own'').. Still, Lucas managed to bring visually interresting stuff in that trilogy, despite the anoying characters. Abrahams is just putting flares and beauty shots for no reason. With the new Star Wars, they told us ''we know how you loved the foam aliens n stuff and we used little CGI'' except they put it in all the worst places possible, like a huge vilain hologram that looks like a LOTR troll and Voldemort got a kid together, or that annoying orange thing with Bubble's glasses, or the X-wing making physically impossible moves. It used to be hard work and patience to achieve the perspective in how the spaceship moved in the original trilogy. Now they just rush shit, punch in numbers and think we'll judge it better because it's shiny. Also noticed in the new trilogy how the camera is constantly moving like it's filming some 1990 MTV vjay? As for The Hobbit, well they could have made like 12 movies with Lord of the Rings and they made three, so they made three long ones with a 310 pages book, so they had to fill these movies with something: CGI. That barrel jumping in the river scene is pure comedy too. That stuff belonged in a Donkey Kong video game. And the mountain rock men or whatever they're called. I was like, ''where's that from'' well that's from one line in the book. Rock biter in Neverending Story looks better. Between the Matrix and the sequels too, like that fight outside of the Oracle's place where Neo fights a thousand mr. Smiths, you really can tell when Neo's replaced with a CGI dummy.

The John Wick movies proved you don't need massive CGI...just talented people that know what they are doing. Want to make an action movie? Have the stunt coordinators direct it and scoff at CGI unless it's NEEDED.

If you would take a real chicken (no joke) how it slowly walks watching left/right or to the floor here and there and render a T-Rex over it (of course slowing down), it would look damn realistic. The moment when I stop watching is when the T-Rex starts warning his potential prey giving a loud HUAAAA 50 meters away (damn these scenes are so stupid) and when they try to make look lizards being intelligent or so "damn angry".

I think, much like gamefreak is doing with Pokémon, they believe weither or not they spend the extra weeks-months and/or extra $, people will with shell out money on their franchise regardless while telling people who notice the degradation in quality they are spoiled and childish for calling it out.

Another reason is that the CGI veterans are retiring now.. Many of the best earned a shitload of money, but also had burnout because of the massive workload they had to do. If you bank account is full but you live comparingly frugal (frugal is the wrong word, just not being stupid with money) many of them realized its not worth risking mental health for this and just quit and did what they love on their own. Now there are a lot of 3d animators that just got that job because there is a lot of money to make and they just dont live it but just do it by the book and nothing else. We see this problem in IT also quite a lot - quality is getting worse because the real talents are getting burnt out and quit and do something else

I think what makes it not real looking is that the insane CGI action scenes have camerawork that could never physically be achieved by cameramen/women when they capture real human movements/stunts. The camera view is up in the air, flying left and right and up and down unrealistically, through legs and arms, watching the camera rush toward things at speeds reality won't allow. When you start mixing what the camera is capable of with real people sans CGI with hard to believe CGI capturing, it is recognized in our heads. It's glaringly obvious in some cases. Is there anyone who might be better in the know than I that can address this suggested reasoning?

the idea is that there are more people now that don't really need a perfect movie, just something that looks good enough. And typically that means a studio asks low budget students to do the cgi as to make the highest profit. It sucks but movies that recieve the highest advertising budget will always sell the best.

We have gotten lazier that's pretty much it. CGI is just much faster and easier to make a movie. Nobody wants to take the time to build models, mold 100s of masks, and apply makeup.

This is what happens when the industry chokes VFX studios for money and the best talent call it quits. That and directors that change their minds every two days and end up with the final shots done on an extreme rush schedule.

When we talk about characters, I've always said, I love and prefer the animatronics. For me it is the truth. Chek this out: frvid.com/video/vid%C3%A9o-JjIXwkX1e48.html animatronics puppet from the Thing! And someone will tell me that these fake CG are better. Interstellar was a recent and amazing film, Christopher Nolan used real effects as much as possible including cellulose blown from giant fans to simulate a dust storm. Not only that, but when he had to use cgi, like during the creation of the black whole scene, the team created such a good rendering that it actually contributed to scientists who published a paper about it.

The lighting is the main culprit most of the time. Lighting not interacting realistically, but also the black point is usually lacking, making things too light and "glowy" compared to the real world
