Hello friends! So as some of you may know, I am engaged, betrothed, and affianced - and so I hereby introduce you to part 1 of our 4 part wedding video series! Being the fashion history enthusiast that I am, I decided to do a little exploration into wedding dresses through history and try on 5 authentic vintage wedding dresses (with era-appropriate hairstyling, makeup, and bouquets to boot!) - ranging from the Victorian Era to the 1980s! Which look was your favorite?

As a choco queen myself, the pictures of black people in the older bridal fashions were really cool to see. I’ve never seen a photo of an authentic black flapper before.

Anyone else kinda just get shook when Safiya starts dressing up? She's like a model (I'm new here if she actually is a model oops) and honestly she reminds me of Snow White.

My parents got married January 11, 1946. One DAY after they met. Mom was working as a Rosie the Rivetor. Dad was in the Navy. Mom passed away 1 week before their 66th anniversary. They were married in a courthouse. Sadly we have no wedding pictures but we have many memories of being raised by fun loving, caring parents.

Interesting bit of trivia about the color blue in medieval Europe: the Virgin Mary was always painted in blue because it was the most expensive paint color at the time. That shows the importance of the Virgin Mary in medieval artwork. I wonder if the blue used to tint cloth was as expensive? Probably not, if it was commonly used.

We used parachute silk to make wedding dresses during the war in the UK, if we could get hold of it. It wasn't nice - it was cold and slippery and not very easy to sew or to wear, but with clothing rationed, and "Utility" standards enforced to safe fabric, it was that or a very restrained "afternoon frock".

My nan was married in the UK in the early 1920s. Her dress was "flapper" and the bridesmaids wore cloche hats.

80’s bride here🙋🏻‍♀️ I HATED my dress so much! I wound up throwing it out afterwards. No regrets, it only cost me $350. You forgot about mentioning the “butt bow” that everyone added to their gowns back then!!! Horrible dress, great marriage so I guess that’s what really counted. Married 33 years on October 17th❤️

In China, specifically Ancient-ish China, red was a very common color for the bride and groom to wear during the wedding ceremony because red represents luck in China. Now, wearing white is more common, but usually, during some part of the wedding tradition, such as the tea ceremony, the bride and groom might wear traditional red clothing.
Not only do we get to see you dress up, but we also get some literature that we wouldn't normaly get in school.

When I was a young teen we were still wearing girdles. Thankfully that disappeared about the same time jeans become acceptable junior high school attire. Same with L'Eggs. Didn't like those garter belts with miniskirts or hot pants.

Also, another reason why the government encouraged women to wear red lipstick in the 1940’s was because Hitler reportedly hated red lipstick and so the government encouraged women to wear red lipstick to basically piss off Hitler.
