Today I decided to go houseplant shopping at 7 Big Box Stores in my home town. I am aways curious as to which Walmart, lowes, & Home Depot locations have the best indoor plant selection. Garden Centers in grocery stores & hardware stores like these are typically not the greatest, but I think I was able to find some great plants to add to my houseplant collection! What do you think?

The real tragedy is what happens to the plants that are not "pretty" enough for people to buy. Where I work we cut the plant off at the root and throw it in a bin and pot and soil goes in the trash. It takes hours cutting shopping carts full of plants every day. Yes.... shopping carts FULL EVERYDAY.

I guess I haven’t went at a prime time like spring buttttt... went to menards near me yesterday and it was pretty impressive and highly affordable plants 🤩 the Lowe’s and Home Depot’s are all pretty basic even in June here, haven’t tried Walmart.

So "Creeping Charlie" is just another name for Swedish Ivy. I have one that's a cutting from the Swedish Ivy that's adorned the Oval Office mantle since 1961. I'm so in love with all your plants! I hope my house looks like that some day! 💚

Personally I like Coleus plants, Desert roses, devil's backbone, etc. I currently only have one Coleus, a ton of Devil's backbones' (which I'm not sure where they came from but my house is surrounded), and I have a desert rose outside that I took a cutting from and am currently trying to get it to root in a pot with soil and cinnamon.

Love the video. Sadly the stores here in Canada don’t have a good plant selection anymore unless you go to a plant show like Canada Blooms. I don’t buy plants from Walmart because they don’t care for their plants at all which is a shame.
schm1596 Il y a mois
I just got some great deals at Walmart: a 2.5-foot Yucca for $17, same size huge cluster of Sansoverias for the same price, and a Sago Palm for $10. Of course the tradeoff is that Walmart chronically overwaters their plants, so I had to do some rescue missions right after the purchase, but it was worth it. Also had a ten minute discussion with the garden center employee about why it might not be a great idea to let the agleonemas have standing water on the top of their soil 😅

The plant you called a creeping charlie we know in my country as a 'geld plantjie' in afrikaans which translates to money plant in English. The older people had a thing for keeping them in the house based on some superstition thing. I think it was like a good luck thing for your finances or something. It makes like a pretty purple flower.

I live in Serbia where there definitely is a vibrant plant culture that stems from ex yugoslavian traditions. Still it's always interesting to see all the varieties available in more progressive countries or western countries. Typically I'll buy my plants at local farmer's markets, though they tend to have lice due to the quarantine the farmers unintentionally create. I've also done my own research on where to find quality plant variety, within this prolific plant collecting year, during which I found a few garden centers quite far on the outskirts of the city (lucky I have landscape architects for friends). Still the pickings were slim compared to what I saw at these big box retail stores. I think that's, again, just a cultural difference. We can't import very much into Serbia due to the high taxation. We do have IKEA, though then you're getting the same plants as everyone else. I tend to buy plants that can be quite rare here and stray from the ones I see everyone else buying. That being said I notice a lot of people outside of Serbia are out after plants we sell abundantly. While we don't find a lot of birds of paradise or dwarf banana trees, calatheas and etc. we have a nice pick of vine plants, ferns, monsteras, zz plants. Fun fact: a lot of common household plants that are sold here are jungle plants first seen at the mausoleum of Josip Broz Tito, a national 'pilgrimage site' for yugoslavian people during the 80s and 90s whereby interior decor became heavily influenced by all the plants used to decorate his tomb as a means for people to reconnect to their beloved dictator.

The home depots near me are very basic with the selection. Nothing you don't already have basicly. Like they are cute but no I dont want a money tree Plz and thank you, and I love a good pothos but like oh wow it's a golden... who would have guessed.

Nearly all my local nurseries only cater to outside plants, so I really only have the big stores to choose from for houseplants. And they all must hire doofuses because their selections are terrible with only occasional exceptions. I often have to resort to paying high prices online to acquire specific wishlist plants. sigh.
