A personal thank you to Air Force MSgt Ryan Crane for nominating me for this flight. Thank you sir.
The Thunderbirds have a FRvid Channel
This flight took place on May 3, 2019 in Biloxi Mississippi. The reason it took so long to release is the high amount of research I wanted to do before releasing the video. I even visited the Air Force Research Lab at Wright Patterson AFB to discuss some aspects of this video with Aerodynamicists. Synchronizing all this footage and coordinating additional B Roll with the Thunderbirds Public Affairs Officer also required a lot of effort.
These are my own thoughts, not those of the U.S. Air Force or the Thunderbirds:
I've been around a lot of pilots and ground crew in my life and I must say that the professionalism displayed by the Thunderbirds was astounding. Their goal is to inspire and demonstrate the capabilities of the US Air Force, so I'll take it a step further. If you're a smart young person who is interesting in changing your life for the better, strongly consider the Air Force. The job market isn't the best at the moment but the Air Force still has opportunities available for you to learn incredible skills even if you're not interested in flying. They manage everything from logistics, electronics, aerospace, cyber and even space systems. The threats to freedom are becoming more complex, and in my experience working for the Department of Defense over a 15 year span (even longer if you count my work as a contractor) The US Air Force consists of some of the most intelligent service members our country has. These people are book-smart, but also have the confidence to solve real world problems with their own hands. If I have a complex aerodynamic question, my first call is usually to someone in the Air Force, because they understand these complex phenomena intuitively. For example, in this video you would hear Flack and I talking about pitot tubes in flight. We also had other discussions about fuel burn rates, Prandtl Glauert, weather.... all kinds of things. Simply put, if you're looking for direction in your life, and you're good with science and math... consider the Air Force. That being said, they also need other types of skills as well. Logisticians, writers, creative people who know how to solve complex problems in unique ways.

This video was the opportunity of a lifetime. When asked if I wanted to fly in an F-16, I said "Yes please, and there are some things I'd like to study. Can we try supersonic flight at different altitudes?" I'm very grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank Flack and the rest of the US Air Force Thunderbirds. This flight took place on May 3rd, 2019. This Spatial Disorientation training is something all fighter pilots go through so they can understand how their own physiology works under these conditions. Thank you for watching and learning with me. I always wanted to know what happened in the cockpit when a jet goes supersonic. The F20 was rated for 9 Gs but could take much much more. So much that it killed 2 pilots during test phases, pulling 10 plus Gs. It's a T38 with one massive afterburner engine comparable to the FA18. Did not go into service with any country, but it was awesome!
Brett G
Brett G Il y a jour
No one can imagine what 6+ Gs or heck just what inverted flight is like, you cannot understand how foreign it is to any experience you have ever encountered. It is not majestic in the cockpit, proper aerobatics is brutal. Brutal physically, mentally, and brutal to your situational awareness. I am glad you got to experience it first hand. It has been a few years since I have flown aerobatics in an aerobatic aircraft. While the jets can pull high speed and high-G, the piston birds can due very high-G and absurd things the jet can only dream about, like gyroscopic tumbling. I would love to have the opportunity with the Thunderbirds or Angles all said, you are in a unique position. What a thrill. FYI the speed of sound is influenced not by altitude, but be outside air temperature. Obviously in the troposphere we have a lapse rate generally speaking the higher you go in the Troposphere.

When you said that the limitations of the airplane is the human, and showed that minimal movemnt in the controler caused major changes, if you got rid of the human factor that limits it what would some of the posibilities of the aircraft be?

*Thank you SO MUCH for this video, and thanks to the Thunder Bird team for letting you in for this truly incredible experience.* I myself have always dreamt of boarding one of these one day, unfortunately I probably never will. It has always been my true great passion, however I've always been limited by a ear/nose problem which SPECIFICALLY denies me of flying (not to talk about my stupid eye sight...). Anyways, I am now 21, and will soon pass up on the only opportunity of becoming a fighter jet pilot, since in Italy the constraints for becoming one are extremely high and the maximum age limit for entering the air force is 23...Sadly I wont ever live up to my true dream and passion.. I'll do the best I can to live a good life nonetheless. Because I can undergo an operation for my ears (which temporarily solves the pressure issue), I will hopefully at LEAST get the chance to fly my own private plane one day...for now though, I'll limit myself to studying Physics, which is all I feel like is left for me to do. *This video really made me happy (and sad I guess), but I cannot thank you enough; It means a lot to people like me!*

Dude, I flew in the vomit comet (parabolic arcs in a jet). The secret is: a double dose of Dramamine -- damps your sensitivity to the hair cells in your vestibular system -- lots of people barfed, I felt mostly fine. Oh, and don't look side to side much -- one more coordinate change your brain doesn't have to deal with. Straight ahead as much as you can. Of course, experienced pilots become acclimated to the Gs and don't need all this, but entering as a newbie, it ups your odds of not feeling weird or nauseous.

I talked to a Blue Angel once and I was very surprised when he said their Jets or actually outdated i and been decommissioned I thought they would all have brand new Jets but they're not they're all reused and repainted. Basically these Pilots were flying hand me down when you were like when you were a kid and your parents gave you their station wagon. Now their mechanics are amazing but those planes are not brand new off the line like they look they are decommission and out of service

@ 21:44 - When his eyes were bouncing back and forth, that was the same thing your eyes do when you are drunk and trying to follow a moving object (but caused in a different way). It’s called post-rotational nystagmus. The road side sobriety test cops use is testing for a different thing, which has the same effects. When you’re intoxicated by alcohol and some other drugs, your nervous system experiences the same effects that Destin felt when he was spinning around.

Hey Destin, just wanted to say that your channel is so amazing! I love all of your content and I love the fact that you continue to put out informative things while staying humble all the while! I also wanted to say that one of the books that you gave out as an audible credit I listened to; Skunk Works. It was an amazing book to listen to and I recommend it to everyone! Thank you! I liked it so much that I bought a hard copy of it and gave it to my father-in-law for Christmas and he loved it as well!

By the way, there is some math to determine the angle of bank based on the number of G's being pulled in level turn which at 200 feet you better by flying level. Basically it is the arc tan of square root of (G's squared minus 1 squared) So if she is pulling 9G's it is Arc Tan of (square root (81 - 1)), Square root of 80 is about 8.944 and Arc Tan (8.944) is 83.6 degrees, so she hits about 83 degrees of bank if she is flying level and pulling 9Gs.

That was truly a chance of a life time I'm glad you had the opportunity. I had my F-16 flight back in the mid to late 1980's and it was cool. My pilot beat me up as well , putting me through the paces. My flight was not with the Thunderbird's it was with the Squadron I was assigned to. but it was at the Thunderbird's home base Nellis, AFB. it was awesome but afterwords I was drained and can remember sleeping for like 24 hours straight. I also was fortunate enough to have had a flight in an F-15 which was also with the Squadron I was assigned to in what was at the time called WEST GERMANY. in the early 1980's. and that was truly an awesome experience as well. on that flight we used our gun and did some target practice on a towed target drone out over the Mediterranean ocean off the coast of Italy. Great Times. Thanks for sharing your experiences, I now have a better understanding of what was going on inside my body at that time.
