Intermittent hard starting due to low fuel pressure was solved by a new fuel pump. The KOEO and Idle fuel pressures were low, and the AMP current draw was well below spec, with the resulting diagnosis of a weak pump. I will show you how to drop the fuel tank and install a new fuel pump on the 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette with 170K miles. (Same as the Chevrolet Venture and the Pontiac Montana.) Delphi Fuel Pump FG0148 - amzn.to/2MALMH5.
Thank you for watching.

Should have shown bleed procedure on the fuel pump to avoid excessive fuel spillage when disconnecting the filter

You should have measured the wheel base in order to get the PROPER FUEL PUMP MODULE. NEW PUMP DOESN'T MEAN QUALITY PUMP. IF IT ISN'T ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURED, CHANCES ARE IT IS A JUNK AIRTEX FUEL PUMP. BROKE BEFORE INSTALLED AIRTEX PUMPS LAST ABOUT 1 - 2 YEARS BEFORE TOTAL FAILURE. I HAD A 2000 GMC SAFARI MINIVAN AND IT ATE 4 FUEL PUMPS IN 6 YRS. TOO BAD THEY WASN'T AC DELCO OR DELPHI FUEL PUMPS. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!

Did you watch the video? Did you not see that I bought a Delphi fuel pump? It's too much work to use low quality parts. And your comment about measuring the wheel base makes no sense to me in the current context....

Did it clear your p0 171 code
Buckwsr
Buckwsr Il y a 5 mois
It starts easily now and runs fine with the new fuel pump. The P0171 still continues to be a pain in my side. But I'm not going to worry about it now, as the car is not due for inspection till July of 2020.

You pulled the fuse and stuck the multilmeter prongs in the holes? Cause i tested the fuse itself before and after cranking and it was showing 12.2 and 14.6
Buckwsr
Buckwsr Il y a 6 mois
I am guessing your numbers reflect battery voltage with engine off and engine running. That is NOT what I was doing. I was using the multimeter at the fuel pump fuse to measure current draw by the pump, measured in AMPS. (Put the multimeter on the amps setting, not the voltage setting. Then test for current draw with key-on-engine-off, and then key-on-engine-running.) The low current draw by my old pump verified for me that the old pump was weak and needed to be replaced. Afterward, I tested the current draw of the new pump and saw that it was much closer to what it should be, something like 7 or 8 amps, if I remember correctly.

But why would you only need one glove “right now” what condition would need to change which would warrant a 2nd glove?
Buckwsr
Buckwsr Il y a 6 mois
I'm sure I started out with two gloves. I have no recollection as to why I would have taken one off. I really have no idea. Kids sure are funny though, aren't they?
Kennynva

To bad they didnt make an access port hole in the floor under the carpet that would allow you to get to this without removing the tank.
Kennynva

could have run it with the fuel pump fuse removed until it stalled.

On a 1- 10 difficulty scale, 10 being the most difficult, how difficult was it getting the tank back up in and the vent tube reconnected properly? And what/where did you connect that pressure guage to in the engine bay?
Buckwsr
Buckwsr Il y a 7 mois
If say a 5 or 6 on the difficulty scale. The fuel pressure gauge connects to a Schrader valve on the fuel rail at the engine.

How long did it take you to change out the fuel pump? I need to do the same on my aunts van.
Buckwsr
Buckwsr Il y a 7 mois
I did it on a January afternoon, finished at dusk, so I'd say 4 or 5 hours total, working by myself.

Can u tell me what is sopose to be concerned to the center elbow on the pump I general work on older Chevys but I'm helping a disabled friend because the that took it off hasn't come back in to day it's on a Pontiac Montana but they are basically the same
Buckwsr
Buckwsr Il y a 8 mois
There are two fuel lines (pressure line and return line), and one wiring harness with two connectors. That's it.
Allen Braga
Allen Braga Il y a 8 mois
Since you had a fuel pressure tester connected at the engine, there must be a schrader valve near there. One of the first steps should have been to bleed the fuel pressure at the valve before disconnecting any lines at the tank or filter. That would have prevented the fuel spraying all over the place when you disconnected the line. There will still be some dripping - especially from the filter but nothing like what you experienced.

@Buckwsr LOL! It happens! I didn't search through all of the comments to see if that had already been mentioned but I assume someone looking at your video might not do that either so now it's more "on top". Besides, not all vehicles were blessed with a schrader valve on the fuel line.
Buckwsr
Buckwsr Il y a 8 mois
Good point. Not sure why I didn't de-pressurize the line first.... Possibly I just forgot....

Hey Mister, great vid. gotta 2002 Pontiac Montana 7 seater. Im thinking its close to yours. Did you consider getting in through the floor. I wondering if easier since my tools are limited.

I think I saw a video of a guy removing the seats and carpet from his minivan, and cutting a hole in the floor to access the fuel pump. Looked like a complete nightmare to me. I'd drop the tank if I were you....

Thanks for the note. I agonized over the troubleshooting of this project, as the fuel pump never just up and died, which would have made the diagnosis obvious, but kept working albeit weakly. It's been over a year since I did the repair....still running great.

Its mounted on the frame under the vehicle, driver's side, about halfway down the length of the van....good luck.

Very helpful! Thanks! . My chevy venture has 2010k miles. And a month ago started with hard starts. Pulley tensioner moving a lot. So i replaced. Even spark plugs. Fuel filter. Hair filter erg valve. Cleaned the pcv valve. Removed the carburetor. Cleaned. . Still same shitt. So i noticed the fuel lines are empty after an hour or so. Will be this my problem?. And sometimes running the van shuts down it self. I start again and keep moving. Not often. But yes. So if you can respond to this. Thanks again!

@Buckwsr yes you are right. Is 05. Check engine is on. (2 sensors in muffler). Bank 1 and 2. That's all in scanner
Buckwsr
Buckwsr Il y a an
What year is your venture? they were made from 97-05, so surely it is fuel injected, not carbureted. So your comments about removing the carburetor are puzzling. Possibly you mean the throttle body? Is the check engine light on? If so, get a scan tool and see what diagnostic trouble codes are being set. Some places will do the scan for you for no cost. That may help you identify the source of the problem, or at least point you in the right direction. Good luck.

I recently discovered assembly lube. It would hold that gasket in place while making the tightening of that ring a lot easier, and more secure. It's a glue and a lube in one.
