Happy Halloween everyone! Did you know the Joker's compulsive laughing is actually a real medical condition? When I saw the movie last week I knew I had to make a video on it. Hope you enjoy x

What I love about this movie is because you never know what is real or what isn’t. Is Arthur this victim or is he just deranged? Does he actually have schizophrenia or is he lying about everything for the “joke” of him being relatable? As someone who knows the character of the Joker, if anything he is a super unreliable narrator. You can’t trust what he says because he is literally The Joker. He is literally the personification of an agent of chaos itself. The only parts of the film that I can for sure anchor as real is the killing of the Three Wall Street Guys, the shite comedy performance, him killing his mom, maybe the police avoiding but probably not the first guy he killed, Murray’s death and the riots that killed Thomas and Martha Wayne (as well as the actual end of the movie). I honestly don’t know about this one, any thoughts?

9:16. There is a 99% chance that this is a story the joker made up rather than what actually happened. There are several other inconsistencies throughout the film most notably on the subway Arthur fires 8 shots when his gun can only hold 6.

Hello Doctor. I am doing a BPS paper on the Joker character. What kind of intervention approaches or therapy would you reccommend? I'm not sure if starting with one on one meetings would be beneficial and then build trust into a group setting? Also I felt the social worker failed to provide more resources although she did clarify budget cuts were eliminating services for him, therefore also lacking access to his medications. Great video. Thanks :)

I completely understood his reaction to the massive disappointment he experienced, from his mother to Wayne Senior, and MurRAY's public piss take. Coupled with his childhood experience it's not hard to see why he became the Joker.

So I don't think that Arthur's mental illness can necessarily be diagnosed or narrowed down to one thing such as schizophrenia- it could be one explanation, but equally he could have co-cognitive disorders which all add up to sustained periods of psychosis.

I haven't seen the movie, but schizophrenia didn't strike me as the right diagnosis for Joker, either. Joker (at least in the comics) is a criminal mastermind. You cant' really be a criminal mastermind if you're schizophrenic.

I think he has split personality. Himself, and the Joker. The Fantasies show the Joker's confidence and what the Joker would have done.. He was fully the joker by the end which is why he was so smart in the situation. if the story doesn't look like schizophrenia, it probably is something else.
IceMetalPunk Il y a 25 jours
That's not how DID (split personality) works. With DID, the personalities are distinct, not just two aspects of the same personality.

9:12 Well, she is supposed to be seen as useless in the movie to further show how Arthur has limited support systems ...... 9:20 Oh doctor ...... Remember our world is imperfect and unjust at times that not everyone has the same loving, kind, and compassionate soul you describe them to have ..... I bet there are many therapists that take advantage of patients just like anyone would do for money .......
Hazell Vasquez
Hazell Vasquez Il y a mois
6:30 It could also be he was imagining these scenarios and not really hallucinationating them ...... The movie just showed us what he imagined and it just makes it look like he is hallucinating those moments....... This could also be the reason why you think schizophrenia wasn't presented well in the movie but what happens if he didn't have schizophrenia at all ...... I know alot of people such as myself are always coming up with crazy scenarios when we are distracted ........

This movie was absolutely realistic to me. In fact, maybe this is a stretch but his tragic life mirrored Aileen Wurnos's upbringing and struggle. I saw Arthur as having anti social personality disorder not schizophrenia. I thought the movie was terrific but personally, very heartbreaking at times.

would being a narcissist/ ego maniac feed hallucinations? Like lying to yourself to the point where you forget you lied and believe it genuinely... In the comics at least, everyone assumes joker is schizophrenic but he's a sociopath who has a full grasp of what he's doing. I don't know but it could just be that hes the odd ball out where his visions feed his ego and thats how his psychosis works...

...not all doctors do it for the love for humanity or kindness. I had to go through more than 7 psychiatrists because they either didn't care whatsoever what I was going through, didn't believe me or blamed it on my gender identity/sexual orientation. The last one I change in all visits watched the clock, didn't ask any questions of life or anything, just, what medication?, Do you want to keep it? Good, goodbye. Next. It was horrible, specially when I asked to change meds, it was making me a zombie, she refused for more than 3 appointments. At the end I changed the doctor and he said he was sorry I was denied a good treatment.

This is more of an uneducated guess, but would it be possible that it is self-induced psychosis, so basically, because of his trauma, in combination of the chemical imbalance from the use of drugs, followed by a sudden stop, along with the extreme stress levels? If I'm not mistaken there are cases of highly detailed cases of delusions, though I'm not skilled enough to find proper sources and tend to just go off what I remember hearing or reading

Isnt the scene where Arthur changes from his crooked and deformed self into the dance before his introduction on stage supposed to show him getting control of himself and accepting himself so that he can turn on others in a way?
Alexis Harper

When I watched the movie, I didn’t interpret it as him having schizophrenia, but more of his traumatic brain injury causing a lack of mental clarity and ability to separate fantasy from reality. I thought of the later part of the movie more as fantasy than anything else. This was just my interpretation watching, and of course that may not be what was intended or what many other people interpreted the movie as.

Well can't psuedobulbar be a natural defect? One of my friends seems to have the same thing (though it's much much less frequent than shown in the movie) and from what I know she hasn't suffered from any abuse as a child or anything like that. I know that there were some complications when her mother was giving birth to her (thankfully her mother did survive as well) so maybe that could be the cause if it's not able to show up completely by chance .

I do believe that the reason he's able to do things someone with schizophrenia cannot is because he DOESN'T have schizophrenia. 🔹The visions? I saw those as fantasies. 🔹Yes, he's delusional... But that's attributable to many possible issues. 🔹His grasp on REALITY is crumbling because he's been & being GASLIT. 🔹He's sensitive, and lonely, and his mother has LIED to him for his entire life... But then he learns that maybe she DIDN'T, AFTER he killed her. In which case - who do you trust? Who CAN you trust? How can you EVER know?? When doctors write whatever they please in reports, and rich people get away with everything, and people who say they're your friends are your worst enemies - which way is up?? And when you realize that your hero, the man you dreamed could be your real dad, wants to mock you to your face in front of millions of people - for his own entertainment, ratings, & profit... thereby finishing off any hope you had left in humanity... Then what? Your soul breaks, that's what. What reason is there to live, after all of that? When you've realized that in YOUR world, NO ONE loves you, likes you, or even cares about you. That people are cruel, hypocritical, sadistic, narcissistic, profiteering, self-serving, dishonest, unreliable, and will only hurt you, let you down, or betray you. Well... around about THERE, if you don't take your own life, out of despondency, you become very, VERY DANGEROUS. Because you don't care if you live or die, and you have nothing but contempt for the human race that has so completely failed & disgusted you. The movie JOKER is set in the 80s, but it's made in a post 99% Wall Street protest world... One where we now KNOW that Bruce Wayne should have been using his millions to HELP the city's poor - shelters, soup kitchens, safe injection sites, house the homeless, etc - fund education, push to raise minimum wage, create jobs, and AFFECT CHANGE... You know, instead of acting out his OWN mental illness as an over privileged, white, male, billionaire, vigilante - beating up a lot of poor people who probably got that way BECAUSE of how HIS FAMILY made their fortune. And, then... While Joker is descendants into self-destruction, sickened by an uncaring, callous, money driven world... He's suddenly surrounded by people holding him up as some sort of hero - which surprises the hell out of him. And is an indictment of US, yet also tips us, the audience, off as to the real point of THIS (yet another Batman franchise) movie. He was doing his OWN thing - he went on the show, and took revenge... he took a stand, in many ways for himself, against EVERYONE who'd treated him so terribly in life. He'd SNAPPED - and effectively, as he couldn't beat them (and stay kind, loving, & pure of heart) he'd JOINED THEM... becoming violent, cruel, self-serving, & everything he LOATHED about them, magnified, and thrown back at them. And, NOW, they loved him?! Now?... WOW... You love the psycho, but NOT the human. PLUS, it will be interesting to see where they take the next movie in regards to the 99% uprising / the global pushback against the billionaire class.

I have a family member who suffers from schizophrenia, the actor's speech in the movie and his body movements very much remind me and my family of our family member, that's why it was hard for us to watch this movie, To us, he seems to understand how a person with schizophrenia behaves

also Joker is more dissociative with sociopathic tendencies due to extreme prolonged abuse (complex PTSD) than schizophrenic - so that's why he'd be acting different from an acutely psychotic person.. Joker is his persona, which allows him to act out suppressed anger and hate for a world that constantly rejected him and by making Joker he dissociates himself from his crimes (in the finale he arguably becomes full sociopath as he abandons any resemblance of a second persona at that point).
StickySauce101 Il y a 4 mois
Gotham has always been depicted as a city that create its "monsters" via gross refusal to modernize, as mentioned he was a very disturbed individual but had Gotham's so-called "experts" been remotely capable of their jobs and had mindsets beyond that of "asylum" era crackpots they'd of detected his vulnerable status as well as the clear danger signs he showed.. to be honest it's not that negative a depiction of mental illness, he tried continually for most of the movie to get help and as he got worse those who were more capable than himself to stop him did nothing - then when he starts killing society labels him as the monster.. well he is.. a monster *they* created.. a monster who could of been prevented from manifesting.. heck, all he truly wanted was to live a "normal" life but "normal" society pushed him over and over.. so I don't see him as the stereotypical "evil madman" trope.. he's what happens when someone who is deeply ill is completely denied a chance to heal.

I enjoyed this breakdown and seeing your take on it. Though, one comment I'd like to say: I totally understand point 3 and do agree with you in most cases that medical care workers are there because they care.... but I have also experienced the opposite. When I was 16 (10 years ago), I had a situation and I can tell you that no one cared there. Not a single nurse or therapist or doctor. I wrote an essay on my experience there and the trauma I now have over it. In short, going for getting help made everything worse. That time was the most dehumanizing time of my life. So while I understand it portrays a negative image which can scare people away from seeking help in fear that is how they will be treated, I do think there is some value in showing that situations like that do very much still exist and can make a situation worse instead of better.

Schizophrenia comes from the Greek word "Σχιζοφρένια" where "-φρένεια" comes from the word "φρένα" which used to signify sanity/reasoning/logic, so with the word "σχίζο-" from the verb "σχίζω" (to tear), the whole word describes the state of being torn from common reason. If anybody's interested.
