We depart the Galapagos for the Marquesas Islands, 3,000 nautical miles across the empty Pacific. Along the way we have total carnage in terms of breakage (chafe, ripped sails, leaking hatches) and some health issues aboard. This is Part 1 of a 3 part series. Join us every Monday for a new release!

ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on our "dream boat," a performance catamaran named "Archer."
Ten years ago, before kids, we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and friends via FRvid, and by happenstance created one of the earliest sailing channels still posting. We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with our kids.
OUR BOAT is a Ferrari red Outremer 51 performance cruising catamaran. We chose this boat as it has been specifically designed for the purpose of bluewater sailing. It was designed and built to withstand the stress of "sailing multiple times around the world safely and in comfort." And yes, she's nice on the eyes too.
OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then through the Panama Canal. At the time of posting this we have dealt with the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand and are now cruising again in Australia.
PLEASE COMMENT!: As a "family channel," we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think!
THANKS for watching all. Subscribe now and never miss an episode!

I just discovered your channel. I love watching your adventures. You have an amazing family and the experiences and memories you are creating together are the education of a hundred lifetimes. I'm starting my own adventure in about a year, but aboard a motor yacht I had custom designed. I get so much inspiration by watching channels like yours. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and wish you and you wonderful family safe travels.

the problem with using sailboat is instead of relaxing and enjoy the sea,. you should stay awake for nearly 24 hours a day adjusting your sails damn tiring work.. so i would prefer a motorboat.

Your departure from Isabella brought back wonderful memories of our passage on June 23, 2013. The day is etched in my mind because later that day, while downloading charts over the SSB we learned our first grandson was born! Two hours out of Isabella we passed a pod of whales. We made Hiva Oa in 19 days, sailing wing and wing on our Amel Mango. Our second grandson was born August 30, the day we arrived at Point Venus. We sold the boat in Pittwater, after the fourth granddaughter was born. We met Impi in Nuka Hiva and cruised together for a time. Anna literally saved our dog in Tahiti. Glad you met them. Tempest.

Just wondering, do you guys set the autopilot to steer to a wind angle or a waypoint? In the last few years I've mostly used wind angles, the boat sails more efficiently and there's less sail trimming to do. BTW, the O51 is very impressive!
The Sailing Family
The Sailing Family Il y a mois
We tend to use the heading waypoint as the boat tends to "S" when set to wind. We just keep an eye on the wind and trim constantly. We find it faster overall. We'll use the wind setting when the wind is super shifty, usually near land, to keep boat speed up and avoid over pinching. Both nice features to have!

Well sir, you do indeed a fascinating life aboard your family boat. The CodeD damage will hopefully hold up with your sketchy repairs. Your boys are so self-entertained, it just shows that the beatings & sleep deprivation have worked! Kidding! You and Elizabeth have obviously done a great job of nurturing these lads and the proof is so visible now. I’m hoping that Archer maintains her good behavior and keeps moving along so well.

Yes, the autopilot is n the entire passage. Every minute of it. And at night we can set an AIS alarm, a radar alarm and a wind alarm to try and catch some zzzzz’s. If it’s a stormy kind of night or if an alarm goes off, then we have someone awake at the nav station to monitor things. But really there’s nothing out there. It’s a big big empty ocean.

The Sailing Family
The Sailing Family Il y a mois
We approach night shifts like this: If the wind is steady and a safe amount away from our next reefing point, then Seth will sleep with a 20 minute timer at the nav table (we have a passage bed next to it). He'll set the AIS alarm and Radar alarm to go off if something gets within 15 miles, and the Wind alarm if the wind changes. If we are close to other boats, or shore, or if the wind is gusty or squally, then we hold a proper 3 hour watch, waking the next person to come up. It's tough with just the two of us, but we can nap during the day. On this passage, most evenings we over-reefed the boat and had calm conditions, so Seth could nap while on watch. There really is nothing out there.

This Outremer 51, Archer rocks. The speed and comfort is amazing. You nailed it with the 11 knots and a Easter egg hunt comment. I'm consistently amazed with the kids playing, reading or sleeping while the boat cuts through the ocean at 10 plus knots. I love these passage videos.
