They did a lovely and practical job on this boat. I hate things for to be "pretty" solely for that sake, even in my land home. I love functionality and would take that over aesthetically pleasing items if it came down to it. But they have found a lovely way to live practically. However, as a foodie, there is no way I could live without 3 burners and an oven. I don't use microwaves. Yes, it requires some preplanning for defrosting some items, and also having back-up meals. like soup and eggs, if you forget to pull something out to defrost. But, I have a lot of inspiration from their boat. We will be buying a sailboat in the future. The one other thing I am unsure of, is sleeping in a V-berth. I am a stomach sleeper and need to sprawl out with my elbows and legs, and I think it would be maddeningly restrictive. I have been looking at 38-40' monohulls with a center cockpit so I can have a more traditional shaped bed. It sounds like a minor detail, but honestly, at 51 and having been a backpacker and wilderness camper my whole life, I know what I can tolerate and what I cannot. LOL

Awesome job guys. Just one bit of advice from an old sailor and seaman, reconsider the location of your bedroom. The more forward you go, the more you will experience to pitch of the boat, especially if it is motion. The best location would be from midships to aft.

I apologize if this seems rude but I only ask because I want to remodel my hunter 27 in a similar way. How much do you think you’ve spent on upgrades and renovations ?
RAY BAME Il y a 13 jours
@Sailing Uma Wow I took your suggestion to look at this again. I didn't recall that bulkhead surfacing. The whole interior is so visually numbing that I just didn't take notice . Thanks for the lengthy response to this question. My wife and I were just discussing costs and time frame and you spent a lot of effort in your response to him, LoneTacoJ64. It is very much appreciated, especially on an old video like this.
Sailing Uma
Sailing Uma Il y a 20 jours
It's not rude but to tell you the truth it is an impossible question to answer, because there is way too many variables to consider, such as: . If you plan to do all the labor yourself or pay someone to do it and how much labor there is to do... and if you do plan to do it yourself, how much time can you actually afford to be working on your own boat (because we did not have a job, we had little money, but we had all the time in the world to do our own labor) . Where you are in the world will also affect the cost for materials and to have the boat on the hard or at the dock while you renovate, additionally would you have access to workshops, or would you need to rent the space, or would you need to rent the equipment. (we did a lot of our work in the Caribbean, some tools we had, some tools we borrowed, some tools we purchased... And when we were in the states we were fortunate to be invited to marinas who gave us free access to their docks and workshops in exchange for producing content for them) . Cost varies if you buy full price or hustle and negotiate discounts for the parts and gear you need... Like we said, our renovation didn't happen at once, it happened slowly over the course of 6 years as we continued our sailing life onboard... And it's still not done today! For some things we didn't spend any money but it took all our time and energy 24hours a day for several weeks to get them done, and for some, when our time was more valuable we payed for the things we could afford... Plus to be perfectly honest, we do not keep track on every single thing we spend money on over 6 years. but Uma is our home, our only expense aside from food and water, we don't have credit cards and we don't go into dept for anything we do, so in the end, it doesn't really matter. it will cost how ever much you want it to cost. So you see, there is no way for us to give you the answer you are searching for, but I do hope this bit of clarification helps. There are very cheap way of doing things, and there are very expensive ways to doing things, and everyone finds their own balance that fits somewhere between the two.

Washer dryer? It's a must for me.
operator0 Il y a 20 jours
You would really need a bigger boat for that. Not only would you have to find somewhere to install a washer/dryer, but you would need to find somewhere to install a generator and hot water heater. Washing machines don't last very long in this environment. Maybe you would get a few years out of one, but it wont take long for critical components to start rusting, and or break from all the harsh movement of sailing.
Peter Hunsader
Peter Hunsader Il y a 21 jour

Where you store it and how much wood do you take with you on the boat
Sailing Uma
Sailing Uma Il y a 23 jours
We'll cover it more in depth soon, but we can easily carry about a 10-14 day supply with us. We don't burn it at night. If it's really cold (-10C or less) we're at a dock with electric heaters running too so our pipes don't freeze. Our boat really isn't designed for these temps, but we make it work.

You might have only paid $3k for Uma, but I would not want to have paid your cost for stuff to fix it up. And the time and labor must have been a killer at times. But you have a very nice boat anybody would wish to have. Kika is only 5 ft. tall?? Short people seem to have twice the energy of tall people.
