We tried to improve our video rendering times significantly with a hardware upgrade, and the results were... interesting.

You have mountains of hardware and instead of doing a comparison in a separate test machine you rip out the server, change the hardware and only then do you do a comparison? Linus you're a retard.

I want to the LTT shirt that says "sold my soul to Intel back in 2016"

No. They make condoms to stop reproduction at a couple of quid, why would i spend £20 on a hoodie for the same effect ?! Cool vids though bro lol

Strange how you always have issues with XMP, I seem to have been lucky with it so far lol

Wouldn't this be a perfect workload for a 2990wx? He tried 3 intel CPU's and didn't see THAT much of an improvement. For the price of that 9990XE he could do an 24c/32c EPYC build.

Published July 10, so probably July 3 for Floatplane, meaning actual building, recording, and most importantly part selection was done in June. I bet most of the comments are going to be complaining about not using a 3700X or 3900X.
mjc0961 Il y a 8 heures
Okay, so not most of them surprisingly, but plenty of them still exist.

5960X still rocks... Mine runs at 4.3GHz on all cores since 2014 and this proves there's still no point in upgrading it yet 😂

XMP? hmmm - one intel 5820K; 3 motherboards and the 2800Mhz ram would not go past 2400MHz (64Gb off it). 18 months of Threadripper 1920X and its been running faultlessly @ 2800MHz and the CPU does 4.2GHz on its own... with a Notctua push/pull 140 fan arrangement... EK watercooling incomming!
cnnfllsht Il y a 9 heures
i had 5820k and veneance lpx 4x4gb 2666. i could never launch it with 2666 only 2400. once i did it with 125 bclk and got 2750 but the cpu voltage was 1.9v so i ruined it with a mobo. this very ram works now on 3466mhz paired with 2200g ryzen.

1. Use AMD 2. Ram bandwidth have major impact on cores scaling 3. Delete GPU 4. Use FreeBSD and FFmpeg for encoding

Quick Sync is not used for CineForm. Are there other benefits from CineForm worth the increased rendering time? (Full disclosure: I've spec'd out an Intel-based video editing

i think the only thing worse than being linus would be watching his videos for intelligent information. he literally wasted 5000 bucks to try to get his server faster and all he managed to do was 1 fucking minute faster. i'd have fired his stupid ass a long time ago, what a sorry excuse for a technician.
Simon Spencer

Yeah, right: "we could do that... but there are advantages to (spending more money)". Some aspects of video software isn't open to interpretation, meaning even with user-settings, the way it handles transcoding has a minimum duration - no matter what hardware you happen to use.

9:03 that 980 tho
djchristian82 Il y a 18 heures
Linus it's not surprising. Going from a HDET system with four channel memory to a consumer system with dual channel memory and two cores less.

what do u guys think about egpu stuff for this kind of situation?
Verliebt Il y a 21 heure
i wonder. wouldn't it be better to use the same coolant cars use in their radiators instead of water or the stuff pc component shops sell? and for this project, wouldn't a radeon 7 perform better with the better memory?

How does Intel Quick Sync factor into this? Using an Intel CPU with a built-in GPU (e.g. the 9900K) would enable Quick Sync and make H.264 rendering much faster. It seems Quick Sync is not used for CineForm. Are there other benefits from CineForm worth the increased rendering time? (Full disclosure: I've spec'd out an Intel-based video editing machine, but haven't purchased any major parts yet; with Ryzen 9, I'm reconsidering. My current editing rig is too old to support Quick Sync and I'm using a ProRes workflow anyway).

wait, you're running a 100 watt board, a 200 watt cpu, a 300 watt gpu and probably 60-100 watts of ssd plus the pump and the half dozen fans... on a 500 watt psu?? my math head is broken or that doesn't add up and your psu is gonna go boom fairly quickly.

Every time I watch a video, I am shocked by the like/dislike ratio. And wait, It's not what you think. The first time I look at the likes and dislikes, I see that the dislikes are floats(ex. 1.1K) and likes are too big and are turned to integers(32K). As a result, I see that 1.1 is longer than 32 and think that there are less likes than dislikes. Hope someone understands my explanation.
